Scouting 4 Food Extravaganza – 2014!
When: Nov 9th @ 2pm and 15th @ 2pm
Parents and Scouts – Scouting for Food is a nation-wide service project where scouts help collect millions of pounds of food for needy families. Each year Pack 991 participate and collects hundreds of pounds of food that we deliver to a local food bank. Last year our collection was slightly down but I know we can all get out this year and help raise it back up. A door hanger with a flyer about the project is placed on front doors the first Sunday, and the food is collected on the second Saturday.
How it works
This is a two weekend activity. The first event is this Sunday, November 9th. We will be meeting at Roy Cloud School front parking lot on Jefferson this at 2pm and from here moving to our identified territories to deliver the door hangers in 10 neighborhoods – Maps will be provided by our Scouting for Food coordinator, Ian Stevens, so you know where to go. We need 15-20 kids to hand out all the door hangers we have and if turnout is strong, we should be easily done in under 2 hours.
This is a great way to burn off some of that Halloween candy and also to spread good cheer ahead of the holidays as well as have some fun with the other Parents and Scouts! The boys do not knock on any doors – we just hang the flyers on the door handle at each house on the street.
The following weekend, November 15th, we meet again at Roy Cloud at 2pm and coordinate for pickup of the donated food items (canned) from the neighborhoods. We will need adult drivers to drive behind the kids and load up the food. Minivans and Pickup trucks are the easiest for collection. We will then take the food to the food bank for processing.
This is a great chance for the boys to feel what it is like through Scouts to give to others. Your scout can participate in one day or both days. They will get a patch for participating.
Thank you !
Hassett Ace Hardware in Palo Alto is doing a second Pinewood Derby Car Cutting event on Saturday (3/1) for us from 10:30-2:30. Bring your pinewood derby wood block down and they will cut it for you. They also have a dremel and sandpaper to sand it down and primer to prime it afterwards before you paint it. You will want to draw the outline on the car that you want cut beforehand. They also sell car weights, stickers, etc there in the store.
Based on the feedback I received so far I sent a note to the manager expecting a good number of boys. She has asked that we please wear our Scout uniforms so they can take photos of the boys working on their cars.
Hasset’s address is 875 Alma Street, Palo Alto.
